Annual Report to Investors

The role of a college dean is changing. No longer the ivory tower academic, a dean must balance academia, public relations and fundraising to be successful. When Dr. James Bean joined the Lundquist College of Business, it was important to introduce him to constituents in a memorable way.

Ms. Sundstrom took a three-pronged approach:

  1. A formal announcement with an academic focus sent to donors.
  2. An informal cover on the alumni magazine that served to create buzz and as an icebreaker at personal introductions.
  3. A feature article in the alumni magazine that included a formal portrait, biography and details about why he was a good match for the College.

The result provided the appropriate level of dignity for the position, but also pizzazz that positioned the dean as approachable and open. The photo shoot was the dean’s first time on a motorcycle and that photo continues to generate comments.
